Breville bes870 has an inbuilt cleaning feature. The CLEAN / DESCALE light will significantly be flashing show when cleaning is required. Follow these steps to clean effectively

  • In the one or two cup filter disc, place the cleaning disk.
  • Place the filter basket into the portafilter.
  • Put 1 cleaning tablet into the filter.
  • Lock the portafilter into the group head.
  • Turn the machine OFF.
  • Simultaneously press and hold the 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER button for 3 seconds.
  • The cleaning cycle will begin and will last about 5 minutes. Once complete, 3 beeps will sound. Remove the portafilter and check to see if the tablet has dissolved entirely.

Note: If the tablet has not dissolved, repeat steps 5 to 7 until tablet has dissolved.

1. Cleaning the conical burr grinder

This grinder cleaning cycle removes oil build-up on the burrs which can hamper performance. Follow these steps to clean perfectly.

  • Unlock hopper
  • Empty hopper
  • Replace hopper
  • Lock hopper
  • Run grinder empty
  • Unlock hopper
  • Remove hopper
  • Unlock top burr
  • Remove top burr
  • Clean top burr with brush
  • Clean lower burr with brush
  • Clean chute with brush

There are a few advanced cleaning guides for the conical burr grinder. These steps are only required if there is a blockage between the grinding burrs and the grinder outlet.

  • Remove hopper
  • Set ‘GRIND SIZE’ to ‘1’ (finest).
  • To release the nut, use a 10mm socket and turn it clockwise.
  • Set ‘GRIND SIZE’ to ’30’ (coarsest)
  • Unlock and remove top burr.
  • Remove nut, spring, and flat washer. Carefully remove a lower burr.
  • Remove grind fan and washers using long-nose pliers.
  • Unlock the grinds exit chute using the brush or a pipe cleaner.
  • Clean chute with brush.
  • Insert washers & grind fan using long-nose pliers.

  • Rotate ‘Counter-Clockwise’ to tighten nut.
  • Insert & lock top burr.
  • Set ‘GRIND SIZE’ to ’15’ Replace & lock hopper.

Note: The grinder burrs are incredibly sharp, so proceed with caution.

2. Cleaning the steam wand

After texturing milk, make sure to clean the steam wand.

  • After texturing, use steam to clean the milk from the wand.
  • Wipe steam wand after each use.
  • Clean hole with pin.
  • Remove tip.
  • Soak tip overnight then re-attach.
  • Clean the steam wand with a wet cloth, then adjust the steam dial to the STEAM position while putting the steam wand back into the drip tray. This will get rid of any residual milk in the steam wand.
  • Make sure the steam dial is set to STANDBY. To allow the machine cool press the POWER button to off.
  • If somehow the steam wand stays jammed, clear the opening with the pin on the cleaning tool.
  • If the steam wand is still stuck, use the spanner in the middle of the cleaning tool to remove the tip of the steam wand.
  • With the cleaning tool, unscrew the tip.
  • To unclog the tip, soak it in hot water before using the pin on the cleaning tool. Reassemble the steam wand and fasten the tip with the cleaning tool.

3. Cleaning the filters, portafilter, and group head

Rinse out any leftover coffee particles by running water through the machine with the portafilter in place but no ground coffee.

  • Knock grinds out itself.
  • The filter basket should be clean.
  • In the portafilter, place the filter basket.
  • Put the portafilter inside the Group Head then lock it in place.
  • Flush water.
  • To unblock, use a cleaning tool.

If the fine pores in the filters become clogged, follow the recommendations below.

  • In the portafilter, place the filter. Using the filter and portafilter in place, run water through the machine without any ground coffee.
  • The filter basket holes can be cleared with the fine pin on the cleaning tool.
  • For wash the Single Wall filters, just use manual pour feature while trying to hold down the 1 CUP button to pour water through the portafilter.
  • Run a cleaning cycle on the machine with the portafilter and filter in place to thoroughly wash the filters.

4. Cleaning the cup warming plate

A soft, wet cloth should be used to wipe exterior housing and tray warming plate. After that, polish the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Use abrasive cleaners, pads, and rags to avoid scratching the surface.

When the ‘CLEAN / DESCALE’ signal is displayed, Breville recommends that you do the descaling procedures listed below.

2. Fill the water tank with one Breville Descaling powder sachet dissolved in one liter of water.

3. To enter Descale mode, press and hold the 2-CUP button while also pressing and holding the POWER button. The machine will heat up as part of the descaling process, and the POWER button should blink constantly throughout this time. When the POWER button, 1 CUP button, CLEAN/DESCALE indication, and HOT WATER/ STEAM indicator are all illuminated, the machine is ready for descaling.
